Role specification
About the role
FireFly GX is recruiting an Electrical Designer for an established industrial power equipment manufacturer in Crosby, Texas, on the east side of Houston. You turn the electrical design basis into a buildable, code-compliant drawing package the shop can wire from — schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts and schedules for control panels, Power Distribution Centres (PDCs), E-Houses, switchgear and MCC packages — and you size the wire, cable tray and conduit that connect them to the NEC.
This is a hands-on production role. You should be able to draw a control schematic from a functional description, read someone else's schematic and explain what it does, and keep every drawing accurate through revisions, client comments and as-built turnover.
What you'll do
- Produce complete electrical design packages in AutoCAD — control schematics, wiring and interconnect diagrams, one-lines, interior panel layouts and equipment general arrangements
- Draw control schematics from functional requirements, and interpret existing schematics to confirm the intended operation of each circuit
- Lay out equipment inside enclosures and walk-in E-Houses where clearance, egress and equipment fit are hard constraints
- Develop terminal block plans, wireway routing, I/O lists, bills of material, nameplate schedules and cable and conduit schedules
- Size conductors for load, ampacity, derating and voltage drop in accordance with the NEC
- Calculate cable tray and conduit fill, and select the correct tray, conduit and fitting sizes for each run
- Apply NEC requirements to equipment layout and wiring methods, including working clearances, grounding and bonding
- Select components — breakers, CTs and PTs, relays, terminal blocks, fuses and control power transformers — and document them on the drawings and BOM
- Check designs against structural framing, HVAC, cable tray and floor and wall penetrations so interferences are resolved on paper rather than in the field
- Maintain rigorous revision control from redlines through as-builts, with no orphan revisions and no undocumented field changes
- Support the shop during build and testing, answering wiring questions and updating drawings to reflect approved changes
Key skills
- 5+ years' AutoCAD experience producing electrical drawings — required
- Has produced complete design packages, not just marked up someone else's drawings
- Expert-level AutoCAD — project organisation, wire numbering, cross-referencing, and generating reports and schedules
- Working knowledge of the NEC — conductor ampacity and derating, conduit and cable tray fill, working clearances, grounding and bonding
- Ability to size wire, cable tray and conduit fill for power and control circuits
- Understanding of power, control and instrumentation circuits, and how relays, contactors, breakers and power supplies work together
- Ability to draw and interpret control schematics and explain circuit functionality
- Advanced Excel and Bluebeam for markup and comment review
- Technical degree or equivalent shop-floor or design-group experience — a four-year degree is not required
Also useful
- Industrial control panel, PDC, E-House, switchgear or MCC experience
- Familiarity with UL 508A and UL 891 construction rules and NEMA enclosure ratings
- 3D exposure — Inventor or SolidWorks
- Has worked a job through a full revision cycle, including client comments and as-built turnover
- Panel shop or switchgear design group background
What's on offer
- Direct ownership of your projects rather than a slice of someone else's
- Technically varied work on large industrial, petrochemical and utility capital projects
- Shop floor and design office under one roof — you see what you drew get built
- A small, senior team where decisions are made quickly
- Full-time, permanent, on-site in the Houston area
