Role specification
About the role
FireFly GX is recruiting a Project Engineer for an established industrial power equipment manufacturer in Crosby, Texas, on the east side of Houston. This is a dual-accountability role: you own the electrical design basis and the technical compliance, and you own the contract, the schedule and the job cost alongside it. You are the single point of accountability to the client on assigned Power Distribution Centre (PDC), E-House, switchgear and MCC packages running under Tier 1 EPC contracts — from proposal through Factory Acceptance Test and final turnover.
It is not a role for someone who reviews other people's work from a desk. You are expected to know the design well enough to defend it in a client review, and the contract well enough to protect the schedule and the margin at the same time.
What you'll do
- Act as primary point of contact to the client or EPC, owning contract, schedule and job cost from award through turnover
- Own the electrical design basis, calculations and technical compliance for PDCs, E-Houses, switchgear lineups and MCCs
- Build and maintain a Level 3 project schedule tied to the EPC master schedule, with weekly progress curves and narratives
- Own job cost against estimate — WIP reporting, earned value tracking, margin protection and forecast at completion
- Read and comply with full client electrical specification packages and build a compliance and exceptions matrix against them
- Author submittal packages — one-lines and three-lines, schematics, wiring and interconnect diagrams, panel and nameplate schedules, load and heat-load calculations
- Size and calculate bus and cable ampacity with derating, short-circuit bracing, voltage drop, cable tray fill and building penetrations
- Specify and coordinate auxiliary systems — UPS and maintenance bypass, 125VDC station battery and charger, ATS, station service transformers, HVAC and pressurisation, fire and gas interface, grounding and bonding
- Manage deliverables through the VDRL/SDRL and submittal cycle (IFR → IFA → IFC), including comment resolution logs and recovery plans
- Identify scope creep as it appears, price it, and issue change notice within the contractual window
- Expedite long-lead equipment — ACBs, power and station-service transformers, UPS systems, HVAC units, enclosure steel
- Own the ITP, author FAT procedures and lead witnessed Factory Acceptance Testing through to punch-list closure
Key skills
- 5–8 years' combined experience in electrical equipment design (PDCs, E-Houses, switchgear or MCC packages) and project execution on EPC capital projects
- 1–3 years minimum running or co-running direct contracts with a Tier 1 EPC, or equivalent delivery of large industrial, petrochemical or utility capital projects
- BSEE preferred; candidates without a degree considered with 10+ years' electrical project management experience. A PE licence is not required — stamped deliverables route through a third-party registered PE
- NEC working knowledge, particularly Art. 110.26, 240.87, 250, 310, 409 and 450
- UL 891, UL 508A, UL 845, NFPA 70E, IEEE C37.20.1/.2/.7, IEEE 1584 arc flash and ANSI/IEEE C57
- Protective relaying and metering — SEL (751, 787, 849, 2411, 2407), GE Multilin, and electronic trip units (Eaton Digitrip, ABB Ekip, LS Susol)
- Communications protocols — Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, IEC 61850
- Contract fluency — liquidated damages, back-charges, change order pricing and notice periods, milestone billing, retainage, warranty and consequential damage clauses
- Industry-standard project scheduling software, AutoCAD Electrical, advanced Excel, Bluebeam, document control platforms and ERP job costing
- Has authored FAT procedures and stood on the floor for a witnessed test with client and third-party attendance
Also useful
- At least one completed capital project in LNG, midstream, power generation or large data centre work
- Experience supporting site commissioning or resolving field issues remotely — strongly preferred
- Comfort on the shop floor during FAT week, including extended hours as the ship date approaches
- Experience working to a client specification rather than an internal standard
What's on offer
- Direct ownership of your projects rather than a slice of someone else's
- Technically varied work on large industrial, petrochemical and utility capital projects
- Shop floor and design office under one roof — you see what you drew get built
- A small, senior team where decisions are made quickly
- Full-time, permanent, on-site in the Houston area
